Keeping electricity affordable requires clean energy, not a coal comebackImageStates that are generating the most wind and solar power often have lower electricity prices than those relying more on fossil fuels. The U.S. Energy Information Administration found that 17 of the 22 states producing above-average amounts of renewable energy had below-average power costs this summer. The findings challenge President Trump’s claims that clean energy drives up rates and, rather, suggests that rolling back renewable incentives could make electricity more expensive for consumers over time. Most recently in Iowa, Energy Secretary Chris Wright warned that Republicans could face political fallout from rising electricity prices,However, Iowa’s grid clearly demonstrates that renewables are the solution to lower prices. Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) have urged the administration to protect existing projects, emphasizing how clean energy investment is tied to Iowa’s rural economy. For example, wind farms are now the top taxpayers in a third of Iowa’s counties. Clean energy investment helps keep electricity prices low and supports local jobs. Here are a few additional state highlights:Iowa: With 52% of its electricity from wind and solar and an average retail price of 11.1 cents per kilowatt-hour, Iowa shows how renewables can power affordability. Jon Salmon, Business Development Manager for Enerpac, has spent more than a decade growing the state’s wind market and believes clean energy is essential to meeting demand without harming the environment. Read more about Jon’s work advancing Iowa’s wind industry. South Dakota: Matching Iowa with 52% of its electricity from wind and solar, South Dakota shows how renewables can deliver both reliability and local economic value. With an average retail price of 11.7 cents per kilowatt-hour, the state continues to benefit from steady investment in rural clean energy projects that support farmers and landowners across the Plains.New Mexico: Generating 49% of its electricity from renewables and maintaining an average price of 9.9 cents per kilowatt-hour, New Mexico continues to prove that clean energy can be both sustainable and cost-effective. Wind technician Bryanna Valencia entered the industry through a paid apprenticeship and now helps power communities statewide. She says the industry’s openness to workers from all trades makes it a gateway to opportunity. Read more about Bryanna’s path into wind energy.Renewables have proven to be reliable and cost-effective sources of power that help stabilize prices as demand grows. The data makes clear that renewables are not driving higher prices but are helping to hold them down.
